Concept

phrase-based SMT

Phrase-based SMT (Statistical Machine Translation) was the dominant approach to machine translation before neural methods took over around 2014. Instead of translating word by word, it translates contiguous chunks of words called phrases, then stitches them together.

The rest of “phrase-based SMT” is a premium feature: every concept in the library gets a precise, practitioner-focused write-up like this one, cross-linked straight from the paper summaries that use it.
